Utilities

The City of Cordova provides water, sewer, and solid waste services for the community.

To open a new account or resume services, the prospective customer must complete the Utility Service Agreement and pay a deposit to the City. The deposit is refundable after 24 months provided the customer has not been delinquent during that time. The City sends out utility bills monthly for refuse, water, and sewer service.

Senior-Citizen Reduced Charge

Seniors over the age of 70 living in a single-family dwelling may be eligible for a 50% reduction in their monthly utility rate. To be eligible, the senior must live alone or with a spouse at the address identified as the primary place of residence for both individuals on their respective Alaska Permanent Fund Dividends for the prior year. The presence of one or more visitors for a period longer than fourteen days in a month will affect eligibility for this discount.

Water and Sewer

Cordova is blessed with some good, natural water sources like Crater Lake, that feeds Orca catchment, and Heney Creek/Meals reservoir. When involved in outdoor activities in the areas please respect our watersheds. Don’t leave trash or anything else that might affect the quality of the water that we enjoy.

Cordova’s water system is a surface water system. It utilizes water from Murcheson Falls, Heney Creek Dam/Meals reservoir, and Orca catchments that is chlorinated prior to use. Eyak Lake is used as a back-up source. Water from the lake is filtered and chlorinated at the 3.5 MGD filter plant lift stations that serve the higher elevations of the system.

Wastewater is treated in a secondary treatment package plant. There are six lift stations which pump sewage to the treatment plant.

Freeze Protection

Practice Freeze Protection when those temperatures drop. Keep water running through a problem area using the “trickle method”. Dripping water is not enough; the stream should be the diameter of the lead inside a pencil.

Garbage Collection

Residential garbage is collected weekly. Each residence is permitted three cans per week. Garbage should be bagged and tied and stored in clean, watertight, animal-proof containers with tight-fitting lids.  For homes that are outside the boundaries of the pick-up area, residents may bring their garbage to the Whitshed Road baler facility or to the dumpster outside the facility if the baler is closed.

Commercial properties may utilize cans or dumpsters. Dumpsters are available in two sizes. Collection may be scheduled weekly. Contact City Hall to schedule pick-ups.

Hazardous Waste

Paint, oil solvents, anti-freeze, adhesives, etc. may be deposited at the baler any time during regular business hours.

City Landfill

The City also operates a landfill for large items and “junk” vehicles that have been properly certified.
