Booking Policy

To ensure we have time to serve everyone, please book an appointment for each service you need and for each person.

examples:

  • If you’re switching from an out-of-state driver’s license, please book a Knowledge Test and a Driver’s License Application
  • If you and your spouse both need to renew your licenses, please book two separate Driver’s License appointments.

If you’re unable to attend your appointment, please cancel or reschedule to open the spot up for others.

State Identification Card

An Alaska Identification Card is a convenient and reliable form of photo ID for residents who don’t drive, don’t need a driver’s license, or who want an ID card separate from their driver’s license.

State ID verifies your identity for:

  • Opening a Bank Account
  • Accessing Government Services
  • Picking up Prescriptions
  • Age-restricted Purchases.

The card is easy to carry, widely accepted within the state, and provides a secure way to prove who you are without the responsibilities or requirements of holding a driver’s license or REAL ID.

REAL ID ✪ Identification Card

A REAL ID Identification Card is a secure, federally compliant form of photo ID for Alaska residents who do not drive but want an identification card that meets national security standards, or who want an ID card separate from their driver’s license.

REAL ID verifies your identity for:

  • domestic air travel
  • entering nuclear facilities
  • entering federal buildings
  • accessing military bases where identification is required

Choosing a REAL ID card provides added convenience and peace of mind, ensuring your identification will continue to be accepted for federal purposes while still serving all the everyday uses of a standard state ID.

General Knowledge Test

If this is your first time applying for an Alaska Driver’s License, you are required to pass the General Knowledge Test (written exam) before applying. A passing score is valid for 1 year from the date of the test.

Test Format

  • 25 minutes
  • 20 questions
  • Passing score: 80% (or 16 correct)
  • You may skip questions.
    (They’ll be added to the end of the queue)
  • The test ends automatically once you answer 16 correctly
  • If you fail the test, you must wait 24 hours to retake

Practice Test

The sample knowledge test is in the same format as the actual test. If you can pass the practice test a few times in a row, you should do well on the real thing.

The General Knowledge Test is available online for a $11.50 fee. You’ll need a laptop/desktop with webcam. Ensure the background is free of distractions and clutter, or you may be flagged for cheating. If this happens, you’ll have to wait 7 days to retake the test.

Test In Person

You also have the option to take the General Knowledge Test in person at the Cordova DMV. There is no fee for the in-person test.

You’ll need to provide the last 4 of your SSN and one of the following forms of identification:

  • ID Card
  •  Passport
  • Birth Certificate
  • SSA Waiver

Alcohol Awareness Test

If you are under 21 years of age your driver’s license will expire 90 days after your 21st birthday. You must pass the Alcohol Awareness Test before you can renew your license.

Test Format

  • 25 minutes
  • 20 questions

  • You may retake the test as many times as you wish until you pass

There is no official practice test for the Motorcycle Knowledge Test. However, some third-party sites provide practice exams. You may search for and use these at your own discretion.

Instruction Permit

When you turn 14, you are eligible for an instruction permit to begin practicing driving. While you practice, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old with at least one year of driving experience in the type of vehicle you are driving, and they must be seated in the passenger seat at all times.

Instruction permits are valid for two years, and may be renewed one time.

    • SSN or Verification Letter from SSA (no more than 90 days old)
    • One (1) proof of residence
    • Proof of Name Change*

  • Bring parental consent form 433 or bring a parent/legal guardian to sign the D1 form at the DMV
    • Proof of relationship to minor, examples include:
      • Birth Certificate (with parental name change documents, as applicable)
      • Adoption documents
      • Guardianship documents
  • Pass a vision test
    (can be completed at the DMV)
Motorcycle Instruction Permit

When you turn 14, you are eligible for an instruction permit to begin practicing driving. While you practice, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old with at least one year of driving experience in the type of vehicle you are driving, and they must ride next to or directly behind you on a vehicle of the same or higher class.

Standard Driver's License

A Standard Driver’s License allows eligible residents to legally operate a motor vehicle and serves as an official form of state-issued photo identification.

Standard Driver’s License verifies your identity for:

  • Operating a Motor Vehicle
  • Opening a Bank Account
  • Accessing Government Services
  • Age-restricted Purchases

The license is widely accepted within the state and provides proof of driving privileges and identity. Please note that a standard driver’s license is not compliant with federal REAL ID requirements for boarding domestic flights or entering certain federal facilities.

REAL ID ✪ Driver's License

An Alaska REAL ID Driver’s License allows eligible residents to legally operate a motor vehicle and provides enhanced federal-compliant identification.

REAL ID driver’s license verifies your identity for:

  • Operating a Motor Vehicle
  • Opening a Bank Account
  • Accessing Government Services
  • Boarding Domestic Flights
  • Entering Federal Facilities

The license is widely accepted and meets federal REAL ID requirements. Beginning May 7, 2025, a REAL ID is required to board domestic flights and access certain secure federal facilities, unless you have an alternative federally accepted form of identification.
