Burn Pile Security Camera – Upcoming Testing
The City of Cordova is beginning to test a security camera at the burn pile to help monitor use of the facility and address prohibited materials being disposed of or burned.
The City has received complaints regarding prohibited materials being burned at the burn pile, including reports that have been referred to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC). ADEC has informed the City of the need to increase monitoring and enforcement of burn pile use. Continued violations could result in penalties and may put the City's permit to operate the burn pile at risk.
To ensure the City can continue operating the burn pile, the City is evaluating a remote monitoring option to improve oversight and help ensure the facility is being used properly.
Following the testing period, the City will determine whether a permanent camera system will be installed. If a permanent system is installed, updated signage will clearly identify permitted and prohibited materials, notify users of video monitoring, and advise that enforcement action may be taken against violators.
Please help us keep the burn pile available and operating properly by disposing of only permitted materials.
