The City Manager is appointed by the City Council and serves as the chief administrative officer for the City of Cordova.  The City Manager maintains an office at City Hall but is often out in the community or representing the city at regional and state events.   While the city manager may participate in council discussions at the city council meetings, the manager is not a voting member.  The City Manager is a contractual employee who serves at the pleasure of the city council.

The City Manager:    
Administers municipal operations

Oversees department activities

Oversees all personnel activities

  • Appoints, trains, disciplines and removes, if necessary, all department heads
  • Prepares and manages the annual budget as adopted by the city council
  • Negotiates contracts
  • Solicits and administer grants
  • Monitors state and federal legislative activity that may affect the city
  • Represents the city and city council in municipal matters and concerns
  • Interfaces with state and federal governmental agencies, legislators, special interest groups and the general public
  • Serves as staff for all city council meetings
  • Implements council's decisions
  • Consults with city legal counsel regarding municipal, state and federal law
